“The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated: Social Selling future growth opportunities

“The reports of my death are greatly exaggerated. “said Mark Twain.

Is talk of social media’s death greatly exaggerated?

  • Facebook sacked 11,000 staff this week,
  • Twitter may go bankrupt, sacked half its staff – now wants them back,
  • TikTok may be a Chinese CCP – spy agency program,
  • Facebook’s metaverse fantasy spendathon is coming to an end,
  • Linkedln is now the new Facebook,
  • Flickr and Tumblr seemed to arrive and leave the party early,
  • Myspace – arrived and died,

Traditional media (old media), TV, Radio, and Newspapers can’t believe their luck – hopes for a return to the good old days may soon arrive again.

Social media has washed up on this unexpected shore; special interest groups hope it remains shipwrecked – they are ready to feed off the rotting carcass.

It all began about twenty years ago people began to build and manage digital relationships – everywhere across the world.

What started as organising birthday parties multiplied into commercial broadcast channels. All at once, billions could connect for free with celebrities, decision-makers, politicians, and tastemakers. A business model grew up.

We connected and traded up to publishing content for commercial goals – influence and sell more.

Social media provides untold opportunities mixed with wild moments.

Brexit and Trump were not possible without social media, and, in particular, Facebook – Foreign countries (Russia) found they could provoke widespread societal chaos without lifting a gun.

  • The social media formula of more attention and engagement and data-driven advertising profits created the attention-driven content economy.
  • Then the influencer economy distributes marketing messages or product sponsorships using their posts.
  • Polarising, offensive, hate, and fraudulent information were politically optimised. By the time the platforms, the public and politicians realised, the public revolt had begun – new privacy laws to control and stop future abuses resulted.

Billions of people have come to rely on social media platforms for news, community, conversation, or knowledge – to know what is happening that traditional media will not or cannot write.

It remains an enormous business model for many players – so if one or more current brands come or go – what remains or replaces them will be the next and likely better iteration.

It is impossible to remove social media channels – billions of people will not allow it.

It is time to ACCELERATE communities of PASSIONATE NEW BUYERS by fuelling and facilitating their insatiable hunger for authentic content and conversations – so your business captures enormous attention and engagement – influence and sell more.

Now the most valuable asset in the world today is attention.
